Introduction

The Machine Guard­ing Work­shop is intend­ed to intro­duce atten­dees to the con­cepts used to design safe machin­ery, and to con­trol risks on exist­ing machines. The work­shop will intro­duce at a very high lev­el the fol­low­ing concepts:

  • Machin­ery Risk Assessment
  • The Hier­ar­chy of Controls 
    • Inher­ent­ly Safe Design
    • Engi­neer­ing Controls 
      • Dis­tance
      • Bar­ri­ers
      • Guards (fixed, adjustable, mov­able w/interlocks, guard lock­ing, safe­guard­ing devices, i.e., light cur­tains & fences, mats, two-hand con­trols, scan­ners, etc.)
      • Func­tion­al Safe­ty (applies to mov­able w/interlocks, guard lock­ing, safe­guard­ing devices, i.e., light cur­tains & fences, mats, two-hand con­trols, scan­ners, etc.)
    • Infor­ma­tion for Use (man­u­als, instruc­tions, haz­ard warn­ing signs and labels)
